Undergrad Thesis, Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie

Winner of 28th Opera Prima Competition

Graduation thesis "MovaSer", proposing the creation of a multi-cultural dance complex, won a national award " Opera Prima" as one of the bests architecture graduation thesis in Brazil (2015-2016). As a proposal project, it has played a fundamental role in my development as a cross-functional designer and architect. The architectural project and the kinetic facade developed in complement to the design were nationally recognized by winning the the 28th Opera Prima Competition. This prestigious award is the oldest and most significant in Brazil among architectural schools, recognizing the best final graduation projects in the field, encompassing all educational institutions in the country.

The facade holds undeniable significance in the project, encompassing the intentions of the entire proposed context serving as the direct visual link between the city and its urban surroundings. The kinetic facade is a reinterpretation of the system developed by the visual artist Ned Kahn. It consists of rectangular aluminum panels (25x20cm) that reflect parts of the surroundings, articulating and moving in wave-like forms in response to the wind. The facade quite literally dances, and the magic lies precisely in its movement. The fact that homogeneous, static, and similar elements, when behaving spontaneously, unpredictably, and independently, create a playful and interactive effect. The facade's design, besides fulfilling the functional and thermal demands of the building, aimed to generate renewable energy for the complex, harnessing the wind's force to move the small panels.

MovaSer, the Cultural Dance Center, is a space dedicated to the individual, meant to be lived, to be experienced. It is built on the awareness that the more personal influence an individual can exert on their surroundings, the greater their emotional engagement with it. They pay more attention to the space they inhabit, and, above all, they tend to create connections and treat it with care and affection. MovaSer aims to create an environment that offers more opportunities, many more possibilities, for people to leave their marks of personal identification. It should be a placethat is truly theirs in the city, making them feel a sense of belonging. The primary goal, both in the central square and the building, is to create public, open spaces within the city, for the city, allowing for spontaneous appropriations and uses. The intention is not to impose uses; often, appropriations are and should be natural. It is not necessarily true that a specific form always fits a specific purpose; there are forms that not only allow multiple interpretations but also effectively provoke these interpretations as circumstances change. This variety of solutions should be intrinsic to the design and form, like a free dance for each person who occupies this space.
